Han Dynasty Image Brick
combination of painting and relief

Han Dynasty Image Brick (Han Dynasty Portrait Brick, Brick Relief of Han Dynasty) is a form of sculpture used in ancestral halls and tombs as architectural decoration which was popular in Han Dynasty. Pictures are carved into the surface of a brick to make it look like a combination of painting and relief. They are valuable arts for research of Han Dynasty architecture, sculpture, painting, people's lives, customs and thoughts. Most of the bricks have been found in Henan and Sichuan provinces.

Brick relieves in Henan Province mainly depict figures from Chinese fairy tales, historical stories, lucky animals, horses, shooting, dancing and other social life activities. Most of them were carved horizontally to provide a sense of vigorous and powerful movements.

Brick relieves in Sichuan Province are portraying vehicles, acrobatics, dancing performances, farming practices, cooking scenes, etc., featuring the depiction of details and exaggeration of movements. Compared with the themes of brick relieves in other areas, those in Sichuan focus on social economy and customs instead of history.
