Piaose originated in Guangdong as early as the 1860s after the Taiping Rebellion (Rebellion of Great Peace, 1850-1864). It is a parade at which some children stand on the support and wear different costumes, with different topics. It is a traditional folk activity performed mainly in Wuchuan and Shawan in Guangdong Province and Cheung Chau in Hongkong every year, usually during the Spring Festival. It has become an annual performance item of Hongkong.
The handcarts are decorated with flowers and other plants, fake animals and some equipment. Children stand on the plants, red-tasseled spears or the end of the swords. It looks like they are floating in the air. In fact, steel bars are hidden in the children's clothes and are twisted to a frame to support the children. The children all wear make-up and are often dressed in different clothes to perform the characters of the historical stories and legends.
