The Kazakh (Kazak) ethnic minority is mainly in Xinjiang, Qinghai and Gansu provinces. Kazakhs are descendants of Turkic tribes, Mongol groups and Indo-Iranian tribes Most Kazakh people live a nomadic life as the change of seasons and live in movable houses-the yurt. They enjoy the meat and milk of sheep, goats, oxen and camels. Milk tea and Kumiss (a kind of wine made out of horse milk) are their favorite drinks.
Their clothes are made of leather and the hides of livestock. In winter, men often wear woolen coats with a belt and a sword around their waist while women wear red skirts decorated with silver pieces. Girls decorate their flower-patterned hats with owl feathers.
They are good at singing and dancing and riding horses. During festivals, people will sing with the musical instrument Dombra (Dongbula), and hold activities such as horse-riding, wrestling and sheep-catching. The Corban and Id El-fitr festivals are occasions for feasts of mutton and mutual greetings. The Nawuruz Festival in the first month of the lunar calendar is a grand occasion to say good-bye to the old and hope for a better year in stockbreeding.
