The Zhuang are an ethnic group who mostly live in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China. Some also live in the Yunnan, Guangdong, Guizhou and Hunan provinces. The 18 million populations make the Zhuang the largest minority in China. The Zhuang are of Tai origin, a people who migrated south from central China roughly 5000 years ago. The Zhuang settled in what is now Guangxi while other Tai peoples moved to Yunnan.
The Zhuang women usually wear the collarless, embroidered jackets buttoned to the left along with loose and wide trousers, or skirts and embroidered belts and silver ornaments.
The Singing Festival on March 3rd of Chinese lunar calendar is a traditional occasion using songs for their expression. On that day, the Zhuang people sacrifice Liu Sanjie (a Zhuang minority girl who is good at singing) and sing to challenge each other. Lyrics are usually improvisational and humorous that makes every one burst into laughter. It is considered the Valentine's Day of the Zhuang because it is for young men to express love to girls by singing.
