The Manchu people are originated in Manchuria (today's Northeastern China). During their rise in the 17th century, they conquered the Ming Dynasty and founded the Qing Dynasty. Now the Man people live mainly in Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning Provinces of north China. After the fall of the Ming Dynasty, Manchus adopted many Han customs and traditions.
The Man people are brave and athletic. They excel at riding and shooting, which women and children can do as well as men. In the Qing Dynasty, men shaved off the hair around their foreheads, women coiled their hair on top of their heads. Their traditional clothing (including qi pao/cheungsam and ma gua, Mandarin dress) is popular all over China. The man's clothing once consisted of a short and adjusted jacket over a long gown with a belt at the waist to facilitate horse-riding and hunting. Women wore earrings, long gowns and embroidered shoes.
