Hong Kong is one of the two special administrative regions of China under the policy of "one country, two systems", the other being Macao. The territory lies on the east of the Pearl River Delta, bordering Guangdong Province and facing the South China Sea. Hong Kong is a co-host city for 2008 Olympic equestrian events.

Hong Kong was a crown colony of the United Kingdom from 1842 at the end of the first Opium War until the transfer of its sovereignty to China in 1997. Hong Kong maintains a highly capitalist economy built on a policy of free markets, low taxation and government non-intervention. It is an important center for international finance and trade, with the greatest concentration of corporate headquarters in the Asia-Pacific region. Hong Kong is also known as a Shopping Paradise since most of the goods are tariff-free. Hong Kong has the world's biggest skyline with a total of 7,681 skyscrapers. Dense commercial skyscrapers lining the coast of Victoria Harbour is one of Hong Kong's most famous tourist attractions and ranked the best skyline in the world.

Hong Kong's education system follows the system of the United Kingdom. At the higher education levels, both British and American systems exist. The entertainment industry of Hong Kong is famous. Many performers and filmmakers achieved widespread fame in Hollywood.
