Mao Zedong
Chinese military and political leader

Mao Zedong (毛泽东, Miáo Zédōng, 1893–1976), born in Xiangtan County, Hunan Province was a Chinese military and political leader and is also recognized as a poet and a calligrapher.

In 1927, Mao conducted the famous Autumn Harvest Uprising in Changsha, Hunan Province and rearranged the army in Sanwan, Jiangxi Province. Later, they created the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army of China in Jinggang Mountains. From 1931 to 1934, Mao helped establish the Soviet Republic of China and was elected Chairman. He was the top Communist leader of the Red Army during the Long March. From his base in Yan'an, Mao led the Communist resistance against the Japanese in the Second Sino-Japanese War. He also led the Communist Party of China (CPC) to victory against the Kuomintang (KMT) in the Chinese Civil War and was the leader of People's Republic of China (PRC) from its establishment in 1949 until his death.

Regarded as one of the most important figures in modern world history, Mao is still a controversial figure today. He is respected as a great revolutionary and strategist. However, many of Mao's sociopolitical programs such as the Cultural Revolution are blamed for causing severe damage to the culture, society, economy and foreign relations of China, as well as enormous loss of lives.
