Pines are coniferous trees. There are about 115 species of pine, although different authorities accept between 105 and 125 species. Pines are evergreen and resinous trees (rarely shrubs) growing to 3–80 m tall, with the majority of species reaching between 15-45m tall. Pines are long-lived, typically reaching ages of 100–1,000 years, some even more.
Because of its majestic posture, vigor, and longevity, pines also have an important ornamental value. It is an important part of many Chinese scenic spots, such as Mount Tai in Shandong Province, Mount Huangshan in Anhui Province and Mount Lushan in Jiangxi Province.
It is also the spiritual symbol of firmness, chastity, longevity in Chinese culture.
